Drug Policy
The J.M. Thompson Company Drug & Alcohol Abuse Policy Specifies that:
- All perspective employees shall undergo a test for the presence of illegal substances as a part of the company's regular pre-employment screening.
- Employees sign a release statement that they agree to this testing.
- Anyone refusing to take the test will not be hired.
- Anyone testing positive will not be hired.
- Anyone involved in an accident will submit to a test.
- Employees who drive Company vehicles shall submit to a test from time to time.
- J.M. Thompson Company offers an Employee Assistance Program to those employees who voluntarily report to the Company that they have a problem.
Prospective Employees
Prospective employees shall sign the J.M. Thompson Company Pre-Employment Form, Consent for Drug and Controlled Substance Screening, which gives their consent for J.M. Thompson Company to collect urine samples from the prospective employee. Prospective employees are in a contingency period of employment until they successfully pass their drug screening test.
Prospective employees, who will work as drivers and/or equipment operators, cannot work in these positions until they are tested and the negative test results are reported. At the discretion of the superintendent, these prospective employees might perform other work, not involving the operation of equipment, until their test results are reported.
For prospective employees other than drivers and/or equipment operators, the appointment for the drug screening test shall be within ten (10) days of the completion of the pre-employment form. At the discretion of the superintendent, these prospective employees can work as required during this ten (10) day period and until their results are reported.

It is the responsibility of the prospective employee to make their appointment; however, should the prospective employee lack suitable transportation, the J.M. Thompson Company's superintendent is authorized to coordinate transportation. The J.M. Thompson Company's superintendent has the authority to consider the specific aspects of his/her project and offer a combination of paid mileage and/or paid hourly time for the employee to go to the testing site. The superintendent shall monitor such cases for reasonableness.
J.M. Thompson Company will pay the costs for the pre-employment drug and controlled substance screening.
The drug screening test results are delivered to our corporate office (attn: Safety Director). This process requires about two (2) days. Therefore, following the visit to the testing facility and the collection of the urine sample, the J.M. Thompson Company's superintendent may put the prospective employee to work at the site on a contingency basis. Regardless of the test results, the prospective employee will be paid for all work hours performed during this contingency period.
The results of all drug tests are held as confidential within the Company, and they shall not be released outside of the Company.
Should the test identify the presence of drugs, a second drug test is automatically made using gas chromatography. Thus, it is very unlikely that there can be a false-positive test result.
The J.M. Thompson Safety Director will report any positive test results for illegal drugs of any prospective employee to the J.M. Thompson Personnel Manager for immediate dismissal.
Existing Employee Testing Programs
Driver Testing
All employees who drive Company vehicles shall be required to submit to a test for the presence of illegal substances and or alcohol. These employees will be notified by the J.M. Thompson Company's Safety Director 24 hours prior to testing to report for testing. It is anticipated that these employees will be tested at least twice a year, at whatever testing interval is considered in the best interest of this company.
Upon reporting for testing, the employee will be asked to sign a form consenting to the test. Any employee who refuses to sign the form will be subject to dismissal.
Any employee who tests positive for the presence of illegal substances and/or alcohol will be terminated.

Injury/Accident Testing
Any employee who is involved in, or contributes to an accident or injury, will be required to submit to a test for the presence of illegal substances and/or alcohol. This requirement includes:
- Any injury requiring a visit to a doctor and/or hospital.
- Any equipment accident causing damage to Company property or the property of others.
- A driver who is involved in a DOT reportable accident.
Upon notification of the accident or injury, the supervisor or superintendent will make immediate arrangements for the injured party and/or others involved in the accident or injury to have testing. These tests are part of the Worker's Compensation coverage and will be administered upon request at the Care Facility.
For example, an employee operating a piece of equipment is involved in an accident which causes injury to another person; both the injured party and the operator will be tested. They are both sent to the Care Facility and tested.
The J.M. Thompson Company's Superintendent is responsible to ensure that all tests are performed. The results of the tests must be reported to the J.M. Thompson Company's Safety Director only and not to the superintendent.
Refusal to comply with a post-accident examination of this type will be treated as though the employee refused to obey a direct order. Refusal to submit to a test for the presence of illegal substances under these circumstances will result in termination.
Random Testing
All J.M. Thompson Company employees are subject to random drug screening tests. The J.M. Thompson Company's Vice President of Construction Support Services, Personnel Manager, and Safety Director will select at least one jobsite each quarter for testing.
Any employee who tests positive to the presence of illegal substances and/or alcohol will be terminated.
