J.M. Thompson Company, a general contracting firm, was founded in 1921 by John Marvin Thompson. Mr. Thompson, a machinist by trade, moved to Raleigh from Bahama, North Carolina to begin work with Dillon Supply Company. Prior to starting work at his new position, Mr. Thompson decided to build a home for his family. Just as he was completing the residence, he was offered an attractive price for his home by someone impressed with his attention to detail. Realizing the potential for a career in construction, Mr. Thompson began J.M. Thompson Company, eventually become one of Raleigh's largest homebuilders. Mr. Thompson established a reputation for quality, craftsmanship and customer service. In 1946, John Marvin Thompson's oldest son, Hal, entered the construction business with his father upon returning to Raleigh from serving as a pilot in World War II. After much persuasion, Hal convinced his father to bid on commercial projects. J.M. Thompson Company completely transitioned to commercial, industrial and institutional work within a few years. Through Hal's leadership, the company extended its work area throughout the State of North Carolina. J.M. Thompson Company became known for this high quality work and experienced construction professionals. After the death of John Marvin Thompson in 1953, the company continued growing with Has as President. In the late 1970's, Hal's sons graduated from engineering school and joined the business. John, Dickie and Marty Thompson have grown up in construction and use a hands-on approach to operating the business. All of the brothers still embrace their grandfather's and father's beliefs of quality construction and treating people fairly. |
